SAAC-MCR

Labor Day Classic September 03, 2000

SAAC-Motor City Region opentrack event from Sunday.
Basically, the day was very foggy (but dry) in the morning, but nice in the afternoon.

We had 4 breakdowns:
1. Mustang cut the inner tire on the wheel well and went off (no other damage). Blaming it partly on the inner fender not being clearanced with a sludgehammer, and partly to a cheap Saleen panhard (will be getting a Griggs SD soon).

2. Porsche went off turn one, missed the sand trap and went off into the tire barrier (OUCH!) Hard enough to jam his thumb on the wheel. MAJOR damage to the all fiberglass body(no bumper). See Gingerman event for photos of the car.

3. BMW snapped all four lugs on the driver's rear wheel, she spun around on the car's "belly" and remained on the track. The wheel was shaped like an egg, and the rotor shattered into pieces. We managed to cobble up some front wheel studs (German cars have "bolts", not studs and lug nuts), so we put two off the front onto the spare tire and pushed her off the track.

4. One red Trans Am lost a power steering hose and dumped fluid, but that was cleaned up and the car repaired.

I got black-flagged 3 times for spilling fuel. Hell I was down to 5/8 of a tank and still pulling me off! They said it looked like someone throwing a quart of fuel out the passenger window on a lefthander. I tried a different gascap (off a Lotus, no less) and it solved the problem. Great day! Ran hard, and did well. Will have to review camcorder tape for lap times, but they felt very good for me.

I instructed another female driver (don't have registered driver's list here). She had the blue Trans AM. That car runs nice! Totally stock, but did well. I would have her get on the brakes (early, for safety), and ok, why are we going so slow... So we tried a _lot_ later braking, and she did well. She learned a lot, and I showed her a race line that she quickly got comfortable with.

The silver Audi TT is a friend's car (thus, lots o'photos).
